Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Electoral violence, a recurring issue in Nigeria's political landscape, poses significant challenges for journalists tasked with reporting such incidents. In Lafia East LGA, Nasarawa State, electoral violence is often fueled by political rivalry, voter intimidation, and misinformation. Reporting on these events requires journalists to navigate physical risks, ethical dilemmas, and operational constraints. The role of the media in exposing electoral violence is critical, as it brings accountability to perpetrators, educates the public, and promotes democratic values (Ibrahim & Aliyu, 2023). However, journalists often face threats to their safety, censorship, and lack of access to reliable information, which hampers their ability to report effectively (Okoro & Bako, 2024). This study explores the challenges of reporting electoral violence in Lafia East LGA, highlighting the experiences of journalists and the systemic issues affecting their work.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Reporting electoral violence in Lafia East LGA is fraught with challenges that undermine the media’s ability to fulfill its watchdog role. Journalists are frequently exposed to threats, harassment, and violence, which deter accurate and timely reporting. Additionally, political interference and lack of institutional support further complicate the reporting process. These challenges not only affect the quality of media coverage but also hinder public awareness and accountability. This study investigates the specific barriers faced by journalists and suggests strategies for improving the reporting of electoral violence in Lafia East LGA.
